Meet the Team

Sylvie, Office Manager at Neil Starr, DDS, PC, in Washington, DC

Sylvie was born in Carmel, California. She moved with her family to a number of places - Washington State, California, Virginia, Germany, etc. - returning to the Washington Metropolitan area in 1971. She received a Fine Arts degree from Mary Washington College in 1980. Sylvie has worked with Dr. Starr since February 1985 and is currently the office's Administrative Director and Dr. Starr's Treatment Planning Coordinator, or more appropriately stated - she is the backbone of our office team. She has a great understanding of dentistry and dental procedures and will be able to assist you with any problem that may arise. Sylvie is our go-to person for all administrative and treatment planning concerns.

For 25 years, Sylvie organized the Sherril Ann Siegel Memorial Fund Lecture - a tribute to the late Dr. Sherril Ann Siegel who succumbed to breast cancer in June of 1989.  Together with Dr. Starr, Sylvie made arrangements and promoted the annual lecture for the Greater Washington dental community.  The funds raised have continued to support both dental research and education at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Maryland dental schools and breast cancer research and education at the Washington Hospital Center and George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Sylvie is currently the coordinator of Dr. Starr's study club, Greater Washington Academy of Dental Studies. Sylvie has been a pillar of strength for our practice, and a lesser known fact, Petra and Sylvie are sisters.

Shelvia, Administrative Assistant at Neil Starr, DDS, PC, in Washington, DC

Shelvia is our office Administrative Assistant. She is the very professional, very supportive first voice you will likely hear when you call our office.

She has worked in the dental field as both a certified dental assistant and an administrative office person for more than 20 years. As a native Washingtonian, she has witnessed the marked transformation that our beloved city Washington, D.C. has made. She values each person's concerns and needs and thrives on clear communication. “My goal as the initial point of contact is to exceed our patients' expectations by instilling both trust and confidence with each communication.”

Petra was born in Ft. Benning, Georgia. She has been Dr. Starr's primary dental assistant since 1980, assisting him to provide advanced restorative dental treatment, including full mouth rehabilitation of the natural teeth or Premierdontics™ Teeth-In-A-Day® implant rehabilitations or simple to advanced esthetically challenging restorations i.e. ceramic veneers, inlays, onlays and bonded restorations.

Dr. Starr refers to her as his co-therapist. Her wisdom, knowledge and intuition about what treatments will serve our patients best, are at the highest level and does she have an eye for beauty!

Kimberly is a certified dental assistant for Dr. Neil Starr. She is originally from Houston, Texas. She graduated from Howard University and received a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology. She attended Meharry Medical College and Kim has been a dental assistant for over 25 years. Kim has a very memorable personality. She is very caring and is always advocating for the well-being of her patients - probably a gift passed down to her from her late father, who was a dentist and her mother who helped manage both his office and a dental assisting program /curriculum in Houston, Tx.

Kim is married and has one son. She enjoys swimming, reading, boating, and volunteering with Catholic Charities and civil rights organizations.

Kim and Petra have complimented each other in treating our patients with exceptional care.

Dr. Starr always says he is fortunate to have the two best dental assistants in North America… least on the east coast for sure.

Karen is our Registered Dental Hygienist. Born in Detroit, Michigan, she graduated from the University of Michigan College of Dentistry Dental Hygiene. In 1986 she moved to Jupiter, Florida where she practiced dental hygiene in the offices of Periodontists and Prosthodontists. Karen is an avid athlete and proud mother of two fine sons, Jason Klausmeyer DMD and Bryan Klausmeyer, PhD.

Karen moved to Virginia in 2009 and worked for a periodontist in Alexandria, Va. She is honored and privileged to bring her passion, skill and enthusiasm in periodontal hygiene to Dr Starr's prominent periodontal/prosthodontic practice.

There is truly no stronger advocate for the health of your gums and teeth than our most enthusiastic Karen.

Jose was born in Santiago, in the Dominican Republic. He graduated with a Dental degree in Stomatology in 1985 from the Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra. Upon arrival in the United States in 1989, he decided to explore the option of working in a dental laboratory; and soon became a Certified Dental Technologist (CDT).

Jose joined our team in 1996 and is multitalented in all aspects of dental laboratory procedures. Having honed his skills, he is now a Master Dental Technician (MDT) and operates our dental laboratory and CAD-CAM milling center called Capital Ceramics, LLC. He designs and produces the most sophisticated, technically precise tooth-colored Zirconia ceramic frameworks available in dentistry today, using the Amann Girrbach 5 Axis CAD-CAM dental milling technology. He is truly an artist and an engineer. Dr. Starr feels strongly that having Jose in our office as a co-therapist has been invaluable for supporting the treatment he renders for his patients.  We feel fortunate to have him as part of our dental team.
